OpenAI Plans to Buy Google's AI Chips as It Looks Beyond Nvidia: Report

OpenAI plans to buy AI chips from Google, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke with The Information. The step would loosen its dependence on Nvidia, the company that supplies most of the hardware behind the AI boom. Neither company has confirmed the plan, and the price, the number of chips, and the delivery dates have not been disclosed. OpenAI is one of Nvidia’s biggest customers. The chips OpenAI is reportedly after are Google's tensor processing units, or TPUs, processors designed for one job: the math that AI models run on. Google revealed the chip in 2016, saying it had already run TPUs in its data centers for more than a year. Reports in June 2025 said OpenAI had begun renting Google's TPUs, and the company described it as early testing with no plans to deploy them at scale. A purchase would mean owning the hardware instead of paying Google by the hour. Other details of the plan have not been made public. A> job listing from OpenAI in San Francisco asks for an engineer to lead the optimization of its frontier models on TPUs so the rumors have weight. The work involves compilers, the software that translates an AI model into instructions a specific chip can run, which is why switching chips is harder than swapping parts. Richard Ho, who leads OpenAI's hardware program, spent nearly nine years at Google and was one of the leaders of its Cloud TPU project before joining OpenAI. In September 2025, Nvidia signed a letter of intent to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI as it deployed at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems. A gigawatt is a billion watts, the unit data center builders now use to size their projects. Two weeks later, AMD gave OpenAI the right to buy up to 160 million AMD shares, roughly 10% of the company. The right is tied to OpenAI deploying 6 gigawatts of AMD chips. Nvidia ended up putting $30 billion into OpenAI's funding round, well below the $100 billion in the letter of intent. US summer economic growth accelerates, with AI investment and consumer spending continuing to drive momentum

U.S. economy maintained strong growth in the summer, with businesses investing heavily in AI-related projects and consumers continuing to increase spending despite high prices. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis said Thursday that inflation-adjusted U.S. GDP grew at an annualized rate of 3.4% in the third quarter, up from 2.2% in the spring and the fastest growth in a year. Consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of total U.S. economic output, rose 3.8%. The strong consumption and economic growth data contrast with many voters' negative assessments of the economy. Although Americans are dissatisfied with inflation, they have not yet begun to cut spending, which has helped the economy maintain growth momentum during a turbulent period but could also exacerbate inflation.

U.S. third-quarter GDP grew at an annualized rate of 3.4%, with inflationary pressures reigniting.

According to CoinWorld news, the latest data shows that U.S. third-quarter GDP grew at an annualized rate of 3.4%, the fastest in a year, but inflationary pressures have reignited. The September PCE price index rose 3.6% year-on-year, the highest since May, while the core index accelerated to 3.1% year-on-year. Meanwhile, the European Central Bank confirmed that President Lagarde will step down eight months early. Samsung Electronics raised the scale of its capital expenditure plan, but its third-quarter chip profit fell short of expectations, and it delayed the release of specific shareholder return plans. Microsoft returned to the U.S. high-grade bond market for the first time in more than nine years, planning to raise at least $25 billion. Eli Lilly's third-quarter revenue grew 39% year-on-year, far exceeding expectations, with GLP-1 contributing more than 60% of revenue, and the company raised its full-year guidance for the third time this year. Reports show that DoorDash's acquisition of Instacart could be finalized as early as Thursday, with a valuation of about $17 billion. The Nikkei 225 closed up 1.1%, the Shanghai Composite closed up 0.91%, and the Hang Seng Index closed up 0.23%.

Nick Timiraos:9月核心PCE服务价格上涨0.37%

Coin World news, Nick Timiraos of "New Fed Wire" noted that September core PCE services prices (excluding housing) rose 0.37%, pushing the 12-month year-over-year increase to 3.6%, matching the highest reading since 2024. Core goods prices also held firm, rising 0.20%. During 2024, core goods prices had posted year-over-year declines, but their increase has now reached 2%. If core goods prices continue to rise at this pace in the future, services prices must slow more noticeably for the Fed to have any chance of achieving its 2% inflation target.
