What happens to bridged tokens when a crypto bridge is hacked?

Data from Bijie.com: Bridge tokens may become undercollateralized when a crypto bridge is hacked, triggering a depeg and spreading losses into decentralized finance (DeFi). In many bridge designs, the original assets are locked on the source chain, while corresponding wrapped tokens are minted on the target chain. These new tokens can only maintain a 1:1 value if the assets backing them remain secure. If an attacker withdraws a large amount of ETH from the bridge contract, the wrapped tokens will become undercollateralized, and market participants may sell these tokens at a price lower than native ETH. Attackers may also exploit the minting mechanism to forge unbacked wrapped tokens and sell them on decentralized exchanges, causing even greater losses. Such attacks can leave lending protocols facing worthless collateral, potentially triggering DeFi insolvency. Bridge operators may replace the stolen collateral or pause minting to restore backing.
