More →S&P Global: AI-related liabilities of tech companies may exceed expectations.
S&P Global estimates that the world's largest technology companies may be carrying more AI-related liabilities than are currently known, though the industry's chief analyst said there is no need to adjust any credit ratings for now. Mark Habib, global head of digital infrastructure at S&P Global, said the biggest risk facing hyperscaler ratings remains whether expected profits can be realized. He emphasized that there may be more undisclosed debt in the market. S&P expects the top six U.S. hyperscalers—Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, Oracle, Meta and SpaceX—to spend more than $7 trillion on data centers and other AI-related capital expenditures between 2025 and 2030, and to maintain negative free cash flow at least through next year.

Amazon's $220 billion AI spending pushes free cash flow negative.
According to CoinWorld news, Amazon plans to make $220 billion in capital expenditures in 2026. Although AWS (Amazon Web Services) revenue grew 37%, free cash flow fell to negative $7.6 billion, mainly due to the impact of AI infrastructure costs. Amazon is investing in expanding its artificial intelligence infrastructure at an unprecedented pace, with capital expenditures expected to reach $220 billion in 2026. According to its second-quarter financial report, operating cash flow increased 33% to $161.4 billion, but free cash flow fell from positive $18.2 billion a year earlier to negative $7.6 billion, reflecting a year-over-year increase of $66.1 billion in net property and equipment purchases. AWS revenue reached $42.2 billion in the second quarter, operating income was $16.6 billion, and contract backlog expanded to approximately $496 billion. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said that the company expects to still face insufficient capacity to meet demand through 2027. AWS infrastructure executives are managing risks related to power connections, labor availability, and equipment delivery. Amazon believes that infrastructure costs come before revenue is generated, making negative free cash flow a temporary consequence of rapid expansion rather than evidence of weak customer demand.
