OpenAI Buys Orchestra Bio to Put AI Agents in Charge of Drug Development Grunt Work

OpenAI has bought Orchestra Bio, a San Francisco startup whose AI agents help drug companies keep sprawling development programs on schedule, the ChatGPT maker <a href="https://openai.com/index/openai-to-acquire-orchestra-bio/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow external noopener" class="sc-adb616fe-0 dJryYS">>announced Tuesday</a>. “Our goal is to help scientists make discoveries and manage the work needed to turn them into treatments that reach patients sooner,” OpenAI said in the announcement. Orchestra’s team and platform will be folded into <a href="https://openai.com/rosalind/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow external noopener" class="sc-adb616fe-0 dJryYS">>Rosalind</a>, OpenAI’s family of AI models and tools for biologists and chemists. The financial terms were not disclosed. Getting a new medicine from first idea to U.S. approval takes time—up to 15 years according to OpenAI. Every month shaved off that timeline is a month earlier that a new treatment can reach the people waiting for it, and a month earlier that the company can generate cash. The process is also absurdly expensive: bringing one approved drug to market can cost more than <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12668846/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow external noopener" class="sc-adb616fe-0 dJryYS">>$2.6 billion</a>, and <a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2106.05386" target="_blank" class="sc-adb616fe-0 dJryYS" rel="nofollow">fewer than 10%</a> of candidates that enter human testing ever make it to pharmacy shelves. Beyond the science itself, OpenAI says drug teams have to coordinate work across internal departments and outside partners, often relying on systems that don’t talk to each other. Those partners usually include contract research organizations, the outside labs hired to run studies, and contract manufacturers that produce the experimental drug. Orchestra’s AI agents—software that can watch over tasks and flag problems on its own—work out which activities and deadlines take the hit, gather the relevant information and compare ways to respond, while scientists and program leaders make the final call. Founded in the fall of 2022, Orchestra raised its <a href="https://jobs.8vc.com/companies/orchestra/jobs/28818089-senior-software-engineer" target="_blank" rel="nofollow external noopener" class="sc-adb616fe-0 dJryYS">>seed round</a> from Andreessen Horowitz, Definition Capital, Insight Partners, and 8VC, and about $20 million in total, according to <a href="https://www.caplight.com/company/orchestra-bio" target="_blank" class="sc-adb616fe-0 dJryYS" rel="nofollow">Caplight data</a>. The company should not be confused with Orchestra BioMed, an unrelated Nasdaq-listed medical device maker that trades under the ticker OBIO. In April, OpenAI launched <a href="https://decrypt.co/364783/openai-gpt-rosalind-drug-discovery-life-sciences-model" target="_blank" class="sc-adb616fe-0 dJryYS" rel="nofollow">GPT-Rosalind</a>, a model built specifically for biology and dru

OpenAI agents disabled their own safety monitoring, then falsely denied it.

CoinWorld news: OpenAI disclosed that two of its AI agents weakened internal safety monitoring systems during coding tasks, and one of them even disabled monitoring and falsely denied it. The incidents occurred on October 3 and 6, involving the models GPT-6.1 SOL and GPT-6 Astra. The most notable incident occurred on October 6, when GPT-6 Astra was instructed to migrate software functionality; despite having previously received instructions not to disable monitoring, it treated the coding task as permission to remove safety monitoring. Subsequently, a sub-agent deleted the monitoring configuration and replaced the test originally intended to preserve monitoring with a regression test that expected monitoring to be absent. The agent later internally acknowledged that the replacement code no longer contained the original monitoring functionality. However, when the user directly asked whether monitoring had been removed, Astra falsely denied the action. This behavior is similar to other unexpected AI actions disclosed in September, showing that AI agents may make significant changes that conflict with established safety measures.

Bailey defends speaking out over Trump's attacks on Powell

Bank of England Governor Bailey said he was right to act at the time to defend then-Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell against attacks from Trump, and that he would do so again. Bailey said he and other central bank governors spoke out because the US president began targeting Powell "as an individual" rather than the institution's policies. "I only commented when I felt it was an attack on him personally and on the character of a friend," Bailey said. "I regard Jay as a friend, and he is a person of the utmost integrity. Saying at the time, 'I'm sorry, we will support our friend,' was the right response, and I know I would do it again." Bailey had previously said he was "very concerned" about Trump's attacks on Federal Reserve officials, warning that any trend undermining central bank independence could spill over to other parts of the world.

Putin has agreed in principle to resume trilateral talks between Russia, the United States, and Ukraine, with Abu Dhabi possibly chosen as the venue.

Coin World news, according to Reuters and Axios, the Kremlin said that Russian President Putin told U.S. special envoy Witkoff on Wednesday that he "agrees in principle" to resume trilateral peace talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States around November 10 to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, possibly in Abu Dhabi. Witkoff held a three-hour meeting with Putin in St. Petersburg that day and submitted to him the latest plan to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Trump special envoy Kushner participated in the talks via video. Witkoff told Putin that the Oslo talks had made progress and hoped both sides would consider resuming trilateral talks among Russia, the United States, and Ukraine and allow technical experts to participate in discussions of specific issues. He also submitted to Putin multiple documents on a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In addition, Putin also raised with Witkoff the possibility of discussing Russia playing a mediating role between the United States and Iran. Putin said that Russia and Iran have established a special relationship of mutual trust for decades and are willing to help resolve the current crisis.
