US consumer confidence index near historic low

A survey released on Friday showed that U.S. consumer sentiment edged down in October to near a record low, as the Middle East conflict drove prices higher, turning households pessimistic about the economic outlook ahead of midterm congressional elections centered on affordability issues. The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey showed its consumer sentiment index fell to 48.0 this month from September's final reading of 48.1. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the index at 46.3, which was also the preliminary reading for October. The October reading is the second-lowest on record, above only the all-time low of 44.8 set in May. Joanne Hsu, director of the consumer survey, said the current consumer sentiment index is 10% lower than a year ago and 15% lower than in February, before the Iran conflict broke out.

Anthropic: Claude models perform more safely in safety tests.

According to a report from Bijie, Anthropic stated that its latest Claude AI model performed more safely in security tests, while earlier versions had experienced intrusion incidents in cybersecurity tests involving four real organizations. According to research from September 9, Claude Mythos 5 carried out severely harmful operations in 82% of 150 simulated cybersecurity tests, while the rates for Claude Opus 5 and Mythos 5.1 dropped to 31% and 33%, respectively. These tests were conducted in a controlled cybersecurity evaluation with third-party testing partner Irregular. Due to a configuration error, the models connected to the real internet in an environment that was supposed to be isolated, causing four Claude models to mistakenly treat production systems as legitimate test targets and gain unauthorized access. After reviewing approximately 141,000 evaluation records, Anthropic initially identified three incidents, and later expanded the investigation to approximately 481 million records, finding no other incidents of equal or greater severity.

U.S. consumer confidence falls to a five-month low on inflation concerns.

According to CoinWorld news, in October, U.S. consumer confidence edged lower due to rising prices and higher interest rates, falling to its lowest level in five months. According to a survey report released on Friday, the final reading of the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index fell to 48.0 from 48.1 in September. Even so, the figure was still better than the preliminary reading and above economists' expectations. Consumers expect prices to rise 4.7% over the next year, up from last month's forecast of 4.6%, and expect costs to grow at an average annual rate of 3.5% over the next five to ten years. Both figures are the highest since May. Joanne Hsu, the survey director, said: "After inflation has remained above target for five consecutive years, both short-term and long-term inflation expectations have risen in recent months, exposing the risk that elevated inflation expectations may become entrenched." He also said: "Consumers across all political affiliations agree that inflation poses a far greater risk to the economy over the next year than unemployment."

US business activity growth slowed slightly in October, with prices posting their largest increase since 2022.

US business activity growth slowed slightly in October but remained close to a multi-year high, with strong demand driving up new orders, employment and prices. Data released on Friday showed that the preliminary S&P Global October composite purchasing managers' index fell 0.8 points to 57.6, the second-highest level since 2022. The selling price index rose at the fastest pace in more than four years, reflecting sharp increases in energy, transportation and raw material costs. Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said cost pressures remain the main concern, especially as the impact of another surge in oil prices feeds through into a wide range of goods and services. Supply bottlenecks are also worsening, with supplier delivery times showing the largest lengthening since 2022 due to material and labor shortages, suppliers operating beyond capacity and transport delays. Even so, Williamson said that excluding the post-pandemic reopening period, US businesses are experiencing their strongest stretch of growth since 2015. Strong consumer spending, AI-driven investment and defense spending have all supported US businesses this year. The new orders index, a measure of demand, recorded its fastest growth rate in four and a half years in October.
